Dangers of Alcohol on Your Teeth

Posted on 12/30/2019 by Office
Dangers of Alcohol on Your TeethMany people know that alcohol should be drunk in moderation because it's an addictive substance, however, did you know alcohol is damaging to your teeth as well?

Whether it's beer, wine, or spirits, alcohol can negatively impact your oral health. Of course, alcohol is okay to drink on occasion, but being cautious of your consumption will help promote a cleaner, healthier mouth.

Alcohol that is carbonated, such as beer and champagne, is bad for your teeth. Carbonation in drinks reacts inside your mouth to form a compound known as carbonic acid. Carbonic acid is dangerous to your teeth because it wears away at your teeth's enamel. Enamel wear is no joke either! Enamel, unlike other materials in our bodies, can't regrow on its own. Once enamel is gone, it's gone for good so it's important to protect it at all costs.

Dry Mouth And Staining

Another reason to drink alcohol in moderation is that it can stain your teeth. If you like to have a white and a beautiful smile, you must drink alcohol in moderation. Wine in particular contains high levels of tannins, which are really good at staining teeth. In addition to tannins, alcohol that is carbonated can also make the pores of your teeth's enamel more exposed, making them more susceptible to staining.

The final reason alcohol is bad for your oral health is because alcohol dries out the mouth. A dry mouth may seem like only a minor complication, but dry mouths harbor more bacteria. This is because dry mouths don't have enough saliva. Saliva helps prevent bacteria buildup because it contains a chemical that kills bacteria.
