Tips on Flossing When You Have Dental BridgesDo you have a bridge? There are lots of people who are in the same boat. In fact, over half a million Americans have at least one bridge.

Bridges serve as a way to replace teeth that are no longer there. If you have a bridge, how do you clean it? We have some suggestions.

What Are Bridges?

We use bridges to create the look of teeth that fell out or that were removed. Teeth fall out for all kinds of reasons. They could fall out because of tooth decay, gum disease, accident or injury. Bridges are usually used to fill in a gap of more than one tooth. Usually, bridges are cemented to the teeth on either side of them.

Most bridges have brackets to hold the bridge in place. The middle of the bridge has prosthetic teeth. There are different kinds of bridges, but all of them do the same thing- they complete the look of a mouthful of teeth.

How to Floss Bridges

One potential problem with bridges is that plaque and food particles can accumulate on the bridge, or just underneath it. Because the bridge is permanent, you need to find ways to get the bridge clean. To floss a bridge, you will need to get a specific kind of floss called superfloss. Superfloss looks just like regular floss, but one end is stiff. Because it is stiff, the floss can be threaded in between the gum, the adjacent teeth and the bridge.

To floss the bridge, you need to place the stiff end between the bridge and the adjacent tooth and slide it up and down the way you would to floss each day. Be gentle with the gums underneath the bridge so that you don't cut them. You can use superfloss on all of them, but you need to make sure that you are using regular floss on the teeth that are not a part of the bridge. Do you have questions about flossing a bridge?
