Symptoms You May Have Bone Loss Starting in Your Jaw

Having a strong jaw is very important for your oral health. Your teeth are connected to your jawbone. This connection is what keeps your teeth from falling out of your mouth. Much like exercise keeps your bones strong in the rest of your body, chewing is what keeps your jaw bones strong. This action signals your body that the jaw area needs resources like calcium and this signal directs the resources needed by your jaw to keep it strong. When these resources are not directed to your jaw, it results in bone loss. When you come in for your semi-annual appointments and we take x-rays, one of the things we look at is the health of your jawbone. If we see a potential loss of bone, we will begin the process of determining the cause of the loss and then we can determine the proper treatment to stop the loss and help rebuild your jaw's strength.
What Are Clues that I Can Notice?
One of the first things you may notice is that your facial features may change. You might notice that your chin seems to be more pointed. You may have more wrinkles forming around your mouth. The problem with that symptom is that as you age, you also get more wrinkles around your mouth so that symptom, in and of itself, may not mean that you are losing bone, but it is something that should be investigated since it is also a natural issue with aging. One other facial sign is that it may seem as though your mouth looks like it is collapsing into your face. If you wear dentures, you may notice that they do not fit as well as they once did. They also may not be as comfortable as they originally were. Lastly, your teeth may start to shift forward in your face. If you experience any of these problems, make an appointment. We will determine if it is something you need to worry about and if it is, we can begin deciding the best course of action to take.
