You may have been sleeping with your mouth open for years, and not even know it. We are willing to bet your partner could tell you all about it, however. We bet you have awakened them at least one time with your open-mouthed sleeping habits, since people who sleep with their mouths open also tend to snore. In addition to snoring, there are other problems that sleeping with your mouth open can bring. Did you know that sleeping with your mouth open could damage your gums? If you are a mouth-breather, we have some tips for you so that your gums aren't affected.
Why Sleeping With Your Mouth Open Can Cause Problems
Everyone sleeps with their mouth open from time to time. This is especially true if you have problems with sinus congestion. When your nose is stopped up, you automatically breathe through your mouth.
This sounds like an easy solution to a problem, but it can actually cause problems. Saliva, the reason your mouth stays wet and moist, dries out when you sleep with your mouth open. While you might think of saliva as a nuisance, it actually is good for your gum health to maintain saliva. Saliva works with your mouth to help wash bacteria and other food particles out of your mouth and down your throat. You might think of saliva as a bacteria-fighting tool.
Without saliva, bacteria could grow on your teeth and gums, which is not a good thing. The growth of bacteria leads directly to tooth decay and gum disease. Gum disease, if it is caught early and treated, can be cured. However, if it is missed, it can cause additional infections, loss of teeth, and gum tissue destruction, which can even alter your jawbone.
If you sleep with your mouth open, there are things you can do to help. First, you need to let your doctor know that you sleep with your mouth open. He or she may have solutions for you. You can also contact us to hear about solutions we have for sleeping with your mouth open.
